Wedding vendor availability has become more scarce over the course of the last year. COVID has presented issues like we’ve never seen for the wedding industry. Couples have been forced to reschedule their wedding dates that they’ve had booked for a year or longer which means that they’re trying to find vendors available for their new date. So for couples who are just now planning their weddings it’s proving to be harder than you could imagine to find available vendors.

Many vendors have had to make changes to their cancellation policies due with the COVID restrictions and health and safety risks to their clients. Because of that, vendors are becoming what I’d call “hyperbooked” for the next couple of years. Not only are they still close to fully booked for this year (2021), but due to all of the canceled weddings last year that were forced to reschedule to a new date their availability for 2022 and 2023 is becoming increasingly scarce. So just how far ahead of time should you start looking to hire your wedding photographer?

In short, I would say do not hesitate and contact your photographer options as soon as possible. Wedding photographers are a key part of your wedding day, they capture all the important moments, help the day flow according to schedule, and create the memories that will last you a lifetime. Most couples fall in love with a photographer's work and know that’s who they want to capture their day, but photographers are very limited in the number of weddings they can take on each year. If you fall in love with one specific photographer’s work, you should jump on contacting them as soon as you can and find out their availability. The longer you wait to contact them, the less likely they are to have your date available. 

Generally speaking, I recommend booking your wedding photographer at least a year ahead of time. If you have more than a year to plan, I’d suggest booking even earlier than that with everything going on right now. As of right now, I’m fully booked for 2021 and about half way booked for 2022 already… and it’s only March of 2021! With the uptick of weddings in the coming years, it’s not uncommon for wedding photographers to already be booking mid to late into 2022 right now as well as early dates in 2023.
